A few days ago I felt homesick which I found quite odd as I no longer really have a place that I would call home so I began to think “what is homesickness?”

My experience of feeling homesick was a feeling of wanting to be somewhere other than where I am now, just for a little while. I wanted to be close to my family and have fun with some old friends. My first thought was that perhaps it is familiarity that I miss, and then I started to wonder if there was something uncomfortable in my life that I want to get away from. Why was it that I had been feeling perfectly happy and then I had felt homesick?

When life feels a bit uncomfortable even in a positive manner it is quite normal to want to resort to some comfort that we can recall from our past, and after a bit of consideration I realised that this was the case for me on this particular day. I had been making some changes in my life and this was causing some unease. I wanted to seek some familiarity in the form of being with family and I was feeling some nostalgia for my teenage days in East Africa and therefore missing some of my friends whom I have not seen for many years. I realised I was dwelling on the past and fantasising about the future and as a result I was not enjoying where I am today.

Having realised this I was able to find some acceptance for the fact that on that particular day I was feeling homesick but I knew the feeling would pass eventually if I focussed on what I have in my life that I enjoy.

So how can we cope when we feel homesick?

•	Ask yourself if there is something you want to run away from and not face. If there is something try to find a solution and see if the feeling of homesickness passes.

•	Don’t fight the feeling; it’s ok to feel this way every now and then. Find a place for it, have acceptance for it, and know that it will pass.

•	Phone a family member or a friend and tell them how you feel. It may help just to hear their voice.

•	Find something you appreciate about where you are. If it is a place then go for a visit. If it is a meal then treat yourself etc.

•	Meditate and breathe.

•	Gather you new friends for a fun lunch or dinner and celebrate that you have each other.

•	Write your feelings in a journal or in a letter.

Remember that it is quite normal to feel this way from time to time no matter who you are and what you are used to so don’t be too hard on yourself if you happen to have a homesick day ….

Being a global girl I am noticing the effects that the volcano in Iceland is having on the people around me and my friends living overseas. Many of my friends have people visiting who are unable to return home or they are awaiting loved ones who can not get to their destination. Celebrations, honeymoons and reunions may have been put on hold and travellers may have to extend or cancel their travel.

I am wondering what effect this may have on people relocating to a new country. Some people may have had their furniture shipped but they themselves can’t get to their destination. I am imagining that a number of people living or moving overseas are feeling a deal of stress at the moment, perhaps even experiencing a feeling of separation knowing that they are unable to quickly fly home if they should need to.

This is one of those circumstances where nature rules. We are unable to change what is happening. In some cases people can travel by road, train or boat but for some there is no choice but to sit and wait. With this in mind I thought I would explore what can be done in a situation like this in order to remain calm and positive.

Keep a positive attitude. When there is no choice but to wait for nature to decide then the only choice we have is to keep a positive attitude and to make the most of the situation.

Stay in the now. If your focus is on where you want to be rather than where you are then you are most likely to feel stress. If your focus is on making the most of where you are then you might have some fun.

Explore. If you are stuck somewhere, explore the place where you are stuck. There is no choice but to be where you are so enjoy it.

If you are missing the people you were intending to visit or be visited by set off some time to talk to them via phone or Skype. Agree beforehand that you will talk as if you were together rather than focussing on not being together.

I hope that you have not been affected too much by this situation and that solutions will be found. Remember to breathe if it all seems a bit stressful. Try having acceptance for the tantrums of nature and most of all wherever you are, whether you are stuck, waiting for loved ones or awaiting that much longed for holiday, try to enjoy where you are and research all your nearby possibilities to have some fun.

Bio: Tiffany lives in Utrecht with her husband and their dog. Originally a performer in the United States, Tiffany now runs her own company and does some freelance writing on the side. Any spare time is devoted to singing, crafting, and studying Dutch.

1)	Starting with the basics…how did you become an American expat living in the Netherlands?

Simple: like so many women living in the Netherlands, I came for love. Friends introduced me to this really cute Dutch guy and before you could say “go” we were married and I was on a plane to the Netherlands!

2)	You write, you knit, you perform, you teach and you’re entrepreneurial. Tell us about all the things that you keep busy while living life abroad. Is there one thing that you’re more passionate about or are you equally passionate about everything you do?

The thing that keeps me busiest is my fledgling company Little Broadway. As an avid theater-goer and performer with dreams of Broadway and a Musical Theater degree, I was shocked to find the lack of musicals and musical theater performances (and performance opportunities) in the Netherlands. So, I started Little Broadway. At the moment Little Broadway only offers an afterschool program at international schools in the Netherlands, but I would like to expand that to include adult classes as well.

My other love is writing. My goal is to work as a writer by day and teach after school through Little Broadway. There are a few magazines here in the Netherlands I write for and I write my own scripts for Little Broadway. I’ve also discovered a love of blogging about my expat adventures.

Performing and crafting take up what down-time I have. As far as the placement of my passion – that’s a tough one. I think, really, my passion is creativity and self-expression. Everything listed above has some element of those two things.

3)	How did you become so entrepreneurial? Did you look for ways of creating business opportunities from doing the things you love or did business come from just doing what you’re good at doing?

Little Broadway was created simply out of necessity. With a degree in musical theater and little work experience, I didn’t really have much going for me as far as getting an office job. Add to that the fact that I hardly spoke any Dutch and the poor economy, and I was having a tough time finding employment. When one of the schools I interviewed for suggested that I do an after school club, I took the idea and ran with it. With Little Broadway, I have free reign to do the three things I love: teaching, writing (I write all Little Broadway scripts), and performance. I make my own hours and have a great deal of flexibility. Best of all is that I adore my job!

4)	How has social media been a helpful to you as an expat and as an entrepreneur?

Social Media has been outstanding in both respects. Through Facebook, I can easily keep in touch with family and friends, and share pictures, videos, stories, etc that help them continue to feel like a significant part of my life. And vice versa.

Twitter I’ve found to be more helpful from a business standpoint. I’ve gotten several writing gigs in the past few months from contacts that I’ve made via Twitter. My followers get immediate updates on both Little Broadway and my writing endeavors and, in return, my work gets an immediate response.

Although I do have a LinkedIn account and would certainly recommend having one (it’s a bit more credible than Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace from an entrepreneurial standpoint), I haven’t found it to be quite as helpful as the other two mediums I use.

The multitude of expat forums and communities are also fantastic for advice and finding others who really understand what you’re going through.

5)	What advice can you offer to others about promoting themselves, their products or their services locally or online?

The best advice I can offer is NOT to promote yourself online. This can make you look spam-y and people will automatically ignore you. Do join various social media sites and do keep a blog for your business, just don’t scream from the highest rafter that you’re there to sell something. Instead, give things for free. This doesn’t have to be anything physical nor does it have to be monetary. It can simply be a gift of your time and expertise. Promote others in your niche and concentrate more on meeting the needs of people than getting potential clients. If you meet people’s needs and prove yourself useful, those people will become steadfast clients.

I have lived as an accompanying spouse in 7 countries for the past 23 years with our 4 children. I’m a bilingual (English and French) life coach specializing in services for globally mobile families. As an artist and an art therapist, I combine my creative life and my life experience with my professional training. In essence, I practice the art of coaching through art.

1) You are a Belgian Citizen, born in Morocco, and have lived in seven countries since 1987. Tell us a little about your expat experiences as a child and now as an adult.

As a child I only lived 4 years in Morocco. But I guess this experience has always been the open door to the world. When I was 17 I left for India and except form coming and going, or for my studies, I’ve always moved. As an adult, a women, a wife, a mo

ther I experienced the sweet and the sour of the expat life. The sweet is for me all the discoveries, the challenges of learning new approaches to life, making friends all over the world, being more and more a global citizen… I love that… The sour is the saying good-bye, the packing and finding a new self each time.

But I have learned that it is the overcoming of the sour that, in fact, brings the sweet…!

2) Have you always been artistic? What kind of art do you create?

Yes, I have always had a sweet spot for art. But never really practice. Before becoming an artist, I was calling myself “handy”. I could do a lot with little. Then I became, in my mind, “crafty”: I could create nice little dust collectors!!! It is only 7 years ago, as I came to South Africa, that I met my friend to be, Min. She helps me to grow as whom I really was… an artist.

Now my art is part of my life as much as an expression, a relaxing and earning tool. Creating gives me stability in an ever-changing life. I mainly work with water-color and ceramics.

3) How did your life as an expat lead you to becoming a life coach? What role does art play in your life coaching business?

As I came to South Africa, 7 years ago, I felt that my life was in pieces. I had done a lot in my life but I felt that there was no continuity. I started doing a lots of mosaic work. After some time, the metaphor of the mosaic work became obvious. All these pieces I was putting together were the pieces of my life.

It became clear that art was helping me through my personal journey. As I thought about creating some type of career (my children starting to leave the nest) it wanted to use all the pieces of my experience, my skills to create a new whole. I’m a good listener and good artist and I live among the expat community… putting all these skills together, I re-invented myself as a Creative Life Coach specialized in global mobility. To Train myself, I did an art therapy and a coaching training, I went to the FIGT conference… and keep on developing my art skills.

I have now the perfect life for me: I practice “the art of coaching through art” and I have my own art studio.

4) Your new book is The Art of Possibilities: Creating our path in an international mobile life. Who did you write this book for? Does a person need to be artistic or creative to benefit from reading it?

I wrote this book for the international community in general. In this book I address the shift of identity that happens when one move country, job, family environment, family role…What is specific to the expat live, is that once we change country, it is all the aspect of our identity that change. People that are more sedentary also go through transitions, but they don’t necessarily experiment a complete shift. They are still some constancy in their lives. For example: as one get married, doesn’t mean they necessarily move environment, job, language or even food habits. In the case of the expat community, all what is making our identity like the friends, the house, the family roles, the professional environment, the food, the language….It all changes in an airplane flight. It can be overwhelming when you realize that ways of managing your life that have been effective before your relocation, no longer work.

This book offers “Creative Reflections” that helps the reader not only engage with the media but also to “make friends” with the new experience and empower him or her trough the confusion brought by the change of identity. This book helps people to shift their mind into new perspectives and find creative solutions to their questions. Because it uses the right brain, art is a wonderful tool to access our deepest inner self. It is right there, in our soul that the answer is.

But this book is not about being artistic. Many can be intimidated by art, because they are seeking a final result to please the eye of the observer. Using art as a tool to better understands ourselves is not about producing something nice, it is about what happens during the creating process. That is where the answer to our questions lies.

So, no, there are no artistic skills require to read to take advantage of the message of this book.

5) What advice can you give to other global women who would like to start their own business or write a book while living abroad?

I’m not good at advice. I feel so much that often one good thing for one is not necessarily good for the other. I believe only in advice that people use as an imagination trigger. So please if you read this, push my advice beyond what you read.

My first advice: read my book! It’s all there!

Do a reality check: acknowledge your present. Look around, feel how you feel… do not go into denial.

Find what is important for you in life in general, remember your passions, and remember your dream….

Mix it all and celebrate the wonderful person you are… Because it all starts there… With you…

Than…. Ask for support and help to move in the direction of your dream … ASK, ASK, ASK, …

Wanting to start a business in an exotic tropical environment, either to supplement a part-time or full-time retirement, regardless of your age? Retirement is not a matter of age, it is a matter of money – having enough ongoing money coming in to give one the freedom of shedding a job. If this has been a hunger and passion of yours, having your own business, and especially a business located in Southeast Asia, then you are looking in the right place in the Philippines.

I have personally started six businesses in the Philippines over the past 20 years, and find it exciting each time. Over the years three of these businesses were sold or closed down, as I moved away from asset based businesses towards distribution based businesses, both online and offline.

I have operated some of these as a proprietor, but I found the preferable way to operate from a tax, security and foreign ownership standpoint is to operate with a corporation.

What are the main points to consider?

1. A foreigner cannot form a solely owned business without a heavy investment (for a corporation, you are looking at USD$200,000).

2.	A foreigner can have up to 40% ownership in a corporation – minimum capital to start a corporation is only Pesos 5,000 (approximately USD $1,000).

3.	So essentially the only way to be in business is to be married to a Filipina who holds ownership of the proprietorship, or form a corporation with a Filipina spouse with you owning 40% and she owning 60%.

4.	Of course, you can always enter into a corporation with 40% ownership with a Filipina girlfriend or a Filipino friend – but consider the huge risk of having no control over your fellow majority stock owner(s).
5.	Yet, depending on the purpose of the corporation (such as purchase of a real estate – land or house), it might still make sense, in that when the property is sold you would be entitled to your share of the proceeds.

6.	There is one exception whereby you CAN become a 100% owner of a corporation and that is if the corporation is formed to purchase land, your sole other shareholder is your spouse, and she dies. Under this arrangement, as the heir to you deceased spouse, you are able to retain 100% ownership of the property.

Now, assuming that either (i) you are married to a Filipina, or (ii) the business will be a real estate investment, the question then becomes what should be the form of ownership. The options are:

1. Sole proprietorship – this is a business structure owned by you spouse who has full authority in her own name and owns all the assets. However, she also will owe and answer personally to all liabilities or suffer all losses, but enjoys all the profits. It is easy to form and simple to register with the government.

2.	Partnership – this is a business structure owned by two or more partners. One with more than Pesos 3,000 capital has to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. All the partners have unlimited personal liability for the affairs of the business. There is no benefit to you as a foreigner with this form of ownership by your spouse.

3.	Corporation – this is my preferred form of ownership if the business is going to be anything larger than a small hobby type business. For a small business, you are best off just being in a sole proprietorship – due to the low cost and ease of formation, and its relative freedom from regulation by the government. However, for a business of any significance (a real estate ownership business, a franchise, a significant manufacturing or export business, etc), this is definitely the preferred form of ownership, and you as the foreigner can retain up to 40% ownership. Minimum paid up capital requirement is Pesos 5,000 and it is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The shareholders/owners liability is simply limited to their amount of the share capital. There must be at least five (5) incorporators, each of which must hold at least one share. So what you do, for example, is issue 56 shares to your spouse, 4 shares to her relatives, and 40 shares to yourself.

Do you want more in depth information about starting a business in the Philippines? I have just completed my new book on “Retirement Living in the Philippines”, which covers many of the social and cultural values relating to relationships with Filipinos – an understanding of which is crucial to a successful business.

Download it at http://www.retirementlivinginthephilippines.com

Further, the author is soon to release a new book entitled “The Expat’s Complete Guild to Starting a Business in the Philippines”.

Will Irwin is a powerful entrepreneur and business and life coach. He has started many online and offline businesses both in the USA and in the Philippines, residing in both Hawaii and the Philippines

I’ve been married for almost 14 years. We have a 7-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. Both of our kids were adopted from countries other than Canada. We are 2 Canadians, 1 American and 1 Indian, living in India for the last 3.5 years.

1) Tell me about your family’s legacy in India and your place in it.

In 1965, my grandfather made his first evangelistic trip to India. Since then, he and my grandmother returned every February for one month to minister to people they had made relationships with in the previous years. My grandfather passed away almost 6 years ago, but my grandmother continues to make the trip each year. In 1985, my mom joined them. In 2000, my husband, Shawn, and I joined the family. We immediately understood what kept bringing my grandparents and mom back each year – we fell in love with the Indian people.

My grandparents started a Boys Home here in the early 80’s and about 10 years ago, they started a widow’s home as well.

After my third trip here, I was hit with the realization that I can’t fulfill my purposes on earth in Canada with only visiting India once or twice a year. I knew I had to move here. Shawn had been waiting for me to have this revelation.

In 2006, our home church in Alberta, Canada, sent us here to plant a branch of our “One Church in Multiple Locations”. Our church has since taken over the leadership of the Home of Hope orphanage.

2) What path led you to becoming a businesswoman in addition to your role as a pastor’s wife and mother?

After spending about 3 years to research what it would cost us to live in India, we discovered that, contrary to popular belief, it isn’t cheap to live in India – especially if you don’t want to lower your living standards TOO much. We really saw the potential for business here, and started researching what we could do to make our own money here, as well as be able to give something back to India and the local economy.

3) What kind of businesses do you have? How did you realize these business opportunities?

We have two companies registered with the Indian government, however, both are not fully in operation yet as it seems to take years to get anything off the ground here.

We have just recently started a Training School, where we will teach people basic English, as well as basic employment skills. There are hundreds of thousands of students that graduate as Engineers each year, and an alarmingly high number of those students don’t know proper phone etiquette, or even how to have a job. That’s where we come in – we train them in the basics, and in turn we create employable people – not just educated people.

We also have an export company where we sell factory overage items, such as brand name shirts, accessories, etc.

Our most successful venture has been our banner business. We can print AND ship banners (size has no limitations) to anywhere in the world for a fraction of the cost of what western banner printers pay. Let me make that more clear… it costs a printer in Canada (this is the country where we’ve done our research) about 3 dollars per square foot to print a banner – that’s HIS cost of manufacture, before any margin. We charge 3 dollars per square foot to print AND ship a banner. Same banners, same vinyl material. I had a large banner printed for my daughter’s wall of a photo collage I made of her and her friends and family from Canada… and they’re affordable enough to interchange often.

4) How has the Internet and/or social media facilitated your life work and your ability to do business?

I have mostly used Facebook to advertise products that we have in stock. This has been most helpful as I can send a link to a person not on my ‘friends’ list to view what we have without having to actually become their ‘friend’. But using Twitter and FB for things like this reaches millions – you tell two people they tell two people, etc…

5) What lessons you have learned from doing business in India? What advice would you offer to other expats about starting a business in India?

That’s a loaded question!! Biggest thing I’ve learned… business is hard to do when people aren’t honest; a greased palm gets the most results; things are done, but not done well and nobody wants to do things today… but tomorrow is fine, no? With that said, I believe India is a land of opportunity, and it’s a great place to invest into the lives of people.

Advice for people wanting to start a business here? Make friends with other expats who have already done it, and get their advice and possibly their help if they have it to give. In India, it is not at ALL what you know; it is all about WHO you know. If you are brought to an official by someone who already has relationship with them, you are more likely to receive an answer in a timely fashion than if you were to go there on your own. Also, you must have patience without letting things slip by – know how to hold someone accountable to a GLOBAL way of doing business. And if you are a woman and doing this on your own, don’t expect to get respect in a land that doesn’t hold women in a position of honor, and attach yourself to men who have done this and can help you along the way. There is no shame in that. You can wave your ‘I am woman hear me roar’ flag as much as you want here, it won’t change the level of respect you will receive.

Know the culture; deal with it; don’t buck the system too much – there usually is a method to the madness; and be kind even when you feel like it. Maintain a level of integrity and you will always come out on top and be successful!

Bio: I am a Canadian garden and travel lifestyle photographer, living in Brussels, Belgium with my computer geek husband and three spoiled house-cats.

Bio: I am a Canadian garden and travel lifestyle photographer, living in Brussels, Belgium with my computer geek husband and three spoiled house-cats.

1) As a Canadian citizen, what was the path that led you to being an expat in Belgium?

The short answer is my husband, Andrew’s, job led us here. The real story is a bit more long and winding, as real life often is. In 2004, we were asked to relocate to Amsterdam, The Netherlands for three months so Andrew could work in the Dutch office. We loved The Netherlands and travelling in Europe and decided that we wanted to give expat life a try. When we returned to Canada, Andrew explored the option of a more permanent transfer with his company. While he was in the midst of these discussions, the company was purchased by an American firm. They gave us the go-ahead for a transfer to their European office in Belgium and we moved back to Europe exactly a year after we first left.

2) What kind of photography do you do?

I specialize in garden and travel stock photography. Stock photography means I work with agencies to sell my photos rather than working directly with specific clients. My photos are used in websites, magazines, books and in advertising; one was even on a stamp. These days however, diversity is the key, so I’ve photographed everything from food and hotels to portraits, even the odd celebrity. I also recently branched into creating digital art and I’m really enjoying selling to the art world.

3) How did you go from being someone with a camera to being a professional photographer with a business?

Speaking of long and winding roads… I’ve always been interested in photography and have been taking photos since I was a kid. I studied journalism in university and in my final year I specialized in photojournalism. A year after I graduated, I decided to go back to school and did a two year photography and digital imaging course. It was right at the transition from darkroom to digital so I was very fortunate to learn both. Unfortunately there weren’t many opportunities for photographers back home so I was only doing photography as a hobby.

When we moved to Belgium, I wasn’t allowed to work and had a lot of time on my hands. Because we were travelling, I was taking loads of photos and getting really excited about shooting again. I started investigating stock photo agencies and found a few that were a good fit. I also built an on-line portfolio and started networking with other photographers on-line. It’s taken a long time to build up the business, but because the vast majority is done on-line, I’ll be able to take it with me anywhere we decide to move in the future.

4) Which online tools and real world resources have you used to promote your work and your website?

I use a variety of social networking sites to get the word out about my photography. I’m on Twitter, Facebook and Linkdin. I also have a portfolio on an art site called RedBubble and recently joined a creative community called Addictlab. I also cross-promote my photography on my expat site CheeseWeb and try to be as active as I can on other people’s blogs.

5) Can you offer expats a few simple tips to take with them on their next adventure to improve their own photography?

•	Zoom with your feet, before your lens. Get as close as you (safely) can to your subject and fill your frame as much as possible. Sometimes this means squatting down or standing on something or simply moving closer.
•	Experiment with composition. Don’t always put your subject in the middle of the frame. Placing the subject to the right or left of the frame can be more dynamic. Look up the Rule of Thirds and use it.
•	Don’t be afraid to shoot a lot! The great thing about digital photography is that we aren’t penalized for experimenting. We don’t have to pay for film and processing and we get instant results. Best of all, no one else has to see our mistakes. Try taking your camera off the automatic setting and learning what some of the other buttons do. Play and have fun!

…Who are interested in creating a series of on-line cross-cultural trainings.

Margarita Gokun Silver has recently developed an on-line cross-cultural course “Welcome to Russia”. The course contains video, audio, and written material. It consists of information on Russia and it offers a cross-cultural module through which an individual can prepare for his/her Russian experience.

Her next step is to extend this kind of on-line learning to other countries. To this end she is looking to partner with people who can furnish country information that can be combined with the cross-cultural module developed by her. These on-line courses can then be presented in the Global Coach Center Academy website (http://academy.globalcoachcenter.com/ ) and the proceeds of their sales can be split between the creator of the country information and herself as the creator of the cross-cultural module.

Please contact Margarita directly if you are interested at info@globalcoachcenter.com.

Hello Global Girls!

A word about advertising…
When I logged in to the Global Girl™ Online Community this morning, I noticed a flashing advertisement in the right sidebar (and it’s really ugly, too). I just wanted to let you know that I did not put it there. The GG Online Community is hosted on Ning Networks and they seem to have inserted their own ads in this space since I have not upgraded to a paid Ning platform. The only Sponsor Ads added by me (so far) are in the “Sponsor” sidebar. These are companies that I feel bring added value to expat women. If you would like to advertise your own business on Global Girl™–please drop me a note.

A word about Twitter…
I found a really neat Twitter service this morning that I’d like to share with you from TweepML. It allows us to create a Global Girl™ Twitter Group and for other people to be able to follow all Global Girl™ Member Tweets in one shot. By making your tweets available to follow as part of a niche group, it makes your individual tweets even more powerful–especially as the Global Girl™ Community continues to grow.

This is similar to Twitter Lists, in that it is great exposure when your Tweets are added to someone’s List. This differs from Twitter Lists because TweepML allows each individual to add themselves to the group instead of relying on someone to find you, evaluate your worthiness and then add you to their Twitter list.

Here is the link to join Global Girl™ Tweeps: http://tweepml.org/Global-Girl-Tweeps/

There are “Follow Us” buttons and links available for you to add to Twitter, Blogs or Websites. I’ll add them to the Global Girl Sites as well.

Twitter on!
