Welcome to Global Girl™ Online!
It has taken me more than a week to process events from the Family in Global Transition conference. Unfortunately, I was only able to attend one day of the conference but it was one fantastic day! And although the speakers, sessions and workshops were excellent, it was the people that I met at the conference that really left a lasting impression.
At lunch time, my friends and mentors, Robin Pascoe and Jo Parfitt, were honored for being Trailblazers in the expat community and at FIGT. A well-deserved honor!
Robin Pascoe – As the Expat Expert, Robin is well known abroad for her inspirational and informative articles, corporate presentations, and best-selling books. She is the author of five widely-used books on global living. Since 1998, her popular website has served as an international meeting place, discussion group, and source of advice and information for hundreds of thousands of expats world-wide.
Jo Parfitt - With 26 books beneath her belt, hundreds of articles, many hundreds of inspired students and tens of published authors to her credit, Jo and her team of Book Cooks help new and established writers to make their writing dreams come true. Their services begin with home study programs or live workshops and move on to editing, proof reading, mentoring, design and publishing.
I also had the pleasure of conversing with a few college-aged TCK’s (Third Culture Kids) throughout the day. One of them was Stephanie Yiu, the creator of Denizen, an online magazine and community dedicated to TCK’s. Stephanie interviewed a few Adult TCK’s while she was at the FIGT conference. Those interviews can be found in the right-hand column on the main page of Denizen Mag.
Alaine Handa was another TCK at the conference. And although I didn’t get a chance to chat with her that Friday, I had begun following her FIGT tweets before the conference had even begun. I attended Alaine’s Cracker Barrel session, which was a short screening of her film, I am a TCK. I’m sure not one TCK or ATCK that attended the screening was unable to relate. The people in her film spoke for all of us.
It was a pleasure getting to know these expat authors and their writing. I’m looking forward to reviewing their books for you in the near future:
1) Natalie Tollenaere, author of The Art of Possibilities; Creating our path in an international mobile life
2) Simone T. Costa Eriksson, author of The Mission of Detective Mike Moving Abroad
3) Kathleen McAnear Smith, author of Parents on the Move! Kathleen’s book should hit bookshelves any day now.
Personally, I came away from FIGT, at first a little exhausted, and then filled with excitement. I left with even more confidence to create the Global Girl™ Online Community to help expat authors, photographers, artists and business women promote themselves and one another, as well as their products and services to the global market. I’m looking forward to shining a global spotlight on my fellow expats and their work. I hope my virtual expat friends out there will join me in doing so.
